Unofficial Super Mario Bros. Misfit Pack
July 23, 2026
The Unofficial Super Mario Bros. Misfit Pack is an upcoming unofficial fan work and Mario fangame. It brings five of Mario's most underrepresented platforming adventures into one collection. The project was first revealed during Kaze Emanuar's F3 2026 (Free Fangame Festival) event.
Announcement Trailer
The trailer introduces the collection's five games, its modern presentation, and the planned ways to make these older adventures easier to play.
Why these games matter
Some of Mario's platforming history is difficult to access. The original Super Mario Bros. and The Lost Levels are tied to modern subscription services in some regions, while older ports introduced bugs such as the reverse brick velocity issue in All-Stars. Super Mario Bros. Special and All Night Nippon Super Mario Bros. received even less attention.
Official re-releases also changed parts of the originals. Super Mario Bros. Deluxe changed level geometry and removed bonus content to fit the Game Boy Color screen. Super Mario Maker borrows the 8-bit look, but it does not reproduce the original physics.
The project is being built around a unified, disassembly-based engine. This custom engine is the foundation for a planned PC port and retro remaster: a classic platformer collection that preserves the original games' movement and level behavior while removing hardware limitations and known porting problems. The original game files and their quirks remain the reference point.
The collection covers:
- Super Mario Bros.
- Super Mario Bros. 2 (The Lost Levels)
- Vs. Super Mario Bros.
- All Night Nippon Super Mario Bros.
- Super Mario Bros. Special
Player-controlled presentation
The project does not force a single presentation. For a period-accurate run, players can lock the display to 4:3, disable rewinds and other safety nets, and play with the original hardships. Because the engine is a new implementation, frame-perfect TAS routes and old glitch exploits do not carry over.
For a modern presentation, players can switch between the original 8-bit graphics, the 16-bit All-Stars style, Super Mario Maker and NES Remix inspired looks, or custom texture packs. Optional settings also cover sub-pixel camera movement, look-ahead tracking, and visual corrections.
Adapting the unusual games
Super Mario Bros. Special is a piece of PC-8801 history with clunky physics, choppy screen transitions, and a reddish palette. The project adapts its level content and game-exclusive enemies to the unified engine. Its custom sprites are color-corrected, and texture packs can present the game with a consistent visual style.
All Night Nippon Super Mario Bros. is a rare 1986 Japanese radio crossover that replaced Toads with celebrities. With an original copy of the game, the engine can load those celebrity sprites as an optional visual style. Players can use standard Mario graphics for its unusual level layouts or restore the original textures.
Improvements from later releases
Later releases spread small fixes and presentation changes across different versions of the games. The project gathers selected improvements in one place, including the level-clear animations from Super Mario Bros. Deluxe and visual details associated with Super Mario All-Stars. These changes remain optional when the original presentation is preferred.
